About
It is produced by the Kabila cooperative, in the Gakenke district, in northern Rwanda. The coffee trees grow at an altitude between 1600 and 2000 masl. The production conditions are exceptional for a Robusta. The cherries are selected by flotation before being pulped, then the beans dry-ferment in a tank for 12 hours before being washed.
Drying on African beds lasts around 2 weeks in the shade. This Robusta is packed as pro-grade green beans, which is quite rare for a Robusta.
Robusta is a shrub that can reach up to 10 meters in height. Because of its larger size, it is planted at a lower density than Arabica. Robusta exists in different forms and varieties in nature.
Hybrid varieties are often difficult to identify, but two main types are recognized: Eracta, or erect forms, and Nganda, or spreading forms.
Our Robusta Mr. Kong is a Nganda variety.
Location
The Northern Province of Rwanda is a major coffee-growing region where many washing stations have been established. The area is home to several thousand producers, each owning a small plot of land. The Northern Province, with its lakes and mountains, provides a perfect environment for producing high-quality coffees. It lies at an altitude above 1,600 meters above sea level, which is ideal for coffee plants. The Coko terroir has a savanna climate with a dry winter. Rainfall is much heavier in the summer than in the winter. The average annual temperature is 21.3 °C, with average rainfall of 828 mm. Some forests have been preserved, and hiking tours are organized near Mount Visoke, where it is even possible to spot a gorilla, as the gorilla population in Rwanda has increased over the past 10 years.
