About
Karangura Peak Modern Coffee Farmers Cooperative Society Limited (KAPCCO) was established in 2013 as an association with 400 members and became a cooperative society in 2017 with 700 members. The cooperative focuses on community empowerment, addressing challenges such as limited market access for smallholder coffee farmers in Karangura sub-county and the greater Rwenzori region. Through its work, the cooperative has helped improve the livelihoods of over 4,200 small-scale farmers across 700 beneficiary family farms.
Location
Historically known as the Mountains of the Moon, the Rwenzori region lies on the border between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Mount Rwenzori is one of the last African peaks with eternal snow. Rwenzori is the local term for “water maker,” as these mountains feed many of the region’s rivers.
Mount Rwenzori, Kilimanjaro, and Mount Kenya are Africa’s last glaciers and surround the region’s coffee fields. It is a region where people have been producing natural coffee for decades. While the quality of Ugandan coffee is often questioned, there are those who strive to promote the high-quality coffees produced there, which deserve recognition.
